On 15 May 2026, the DRC officially declared its 17th Ebola outbreak after laboratory confirmation of Bundibugyo virus disease (BVD) in Ituri Province — only the third known outbreak of this rare strain. Unlike other Ebola strains, there are no approved vaccines or treatments for BVD, with historical case fatality rates ranging from 30% to 50%. On 17 May 2026, the WHO Director-General declared the event a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), following confirmation of cross-border transmission into Uganda
